On 12 May 2008, a massive earthquake struck Sichuan Province, resulting in serious injuries and widespread damage to property.
Immediately after the earthquake, Hong Kong people rallied to help relieve the hardship of earthquake victims and rebuild the affected areas. The Legislative Council approved the injection of a total of HK$9 billion into the Trust Fund in Support of Reconstruction in the Sichuan Earthquake Stricken Areas to take forward the HKSAR’s reconstruction work. Taking into account of the HK$1 billion donation by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the HKSAR has committed a total of about HK$10 billion to support reconstruction in Sichuan.
